5 days Tour around Erg Chebbi Dunes
Day 1: Erg Chebbi Dunes
If you ever dreamt about travelling to Sahara Desert, here is the place of your dreams. Orange dunes with soft silken shapes and silhouettes blend with turban men and dromedaries. Erg Chebbi dunes are located in the south-eastern most part of Morocco 25km with the border with Algeria.
Place of nomads and Saharan culture, this dunes are a magnificent place for those who wish to relax and enjoy tranquillity, and, for those who seek adventure. You’ll have the opportunity of doing camel trekking into the dunes to enjoy Sun rise or the Sun set.
Day 2: Rissani
Along with Erfoud, Rissani is one of Sahara’s gate. You’ll visit Rissani old market and walk where history brought ancient caravans all the way from Timbuktu Mali in the Siljmassa trail.
Around Rissani you’ll have the opportunity to visit its kasbah trail, where hundreds of old ksars with local terracotta architecture mixes with thousands of palm trees.
Rissani is the heart of the present king dynasty, the first Alouite king was born here and still today pilgrims arrive to get a blessing at Moulay Sherif Mausoleum.
Day 3: Merzouga and Khamlyia Village
Merzouga is the most well known village around Erg Chebbi dunes. The biggest of all oasis in Erg Chebbi, Merzouga is nowadays the end point of the asphalt overlooking the big dunes that rises up to 250 meters high.
Khamlyia is a small village 10km away from Merzouga. It’s special feature is that this village’s inhabitants are all from African origin. People that stayed and settled during the sub-Saharan caravans trade golden era. You’ll have the opportunity to watch a private Gnawa spectacle with local musicians that blend African rhythms with Sahara vibes.
Day 4: Erfoud, Maadid & Fossil Beds
Erfoud is a relatively new town built by the French in the beginning ot the 20th century. Though the town is around 100 years old, the region was long time inhabited by nomads and a few hundred ksar and fortified villages in the surrounding area.
After a small visit to the town market, you’ll visit its famous fossil beds from where 350 million years ago the Sahara was once the bottom of the sea. In the afternoon you’ll visit the interesting Maadid Ksar where you’ll have the change to walk inside of probably the biggest Ksar in the Morocco.
You’ll have a splendid panoramic view over the town and the region from the top of Arfoud Jbel where you’ll enjoy a magnificent Sun set over Tafilalet endless palm groves.
Day 5: Ziz Valley
This is supposed to be one of the world’s regions with more palm trees per square meter. A visit down the valley gives the chance of visiting unique villages that self-survive from its immense oasis plantations and palm trees.
The Ziz Valley mixes huge red color canyons with greenish oasis and palm groves into a beautiful nature spectacle.
